Big Takeaway: Don't quit! It's our unseen work that produces fruit.
Have you ever felt like quitting something?
Maybe it was a job, the dating scene, going to the gym, eating healthy, or following through with chasing a lifelong dream. The “I’m done with this” feeling hits hard sometimes, right?
Over the past few months, I’ve felt this way about writing!
Truth be told, I’ve gotten turned down by a few opportunities that I really, really wanted. I felt qualified for the roles, prayed about my submissions, and one after one got passed up. I reached a point where I started asking God if writing devotionals and eventually writing books is something He really put on my heart. I began to doubt His voice and His goodness.
But after spending time in prayer and in scripture, He put this message on my heart to share with you if you’ve ever been in the same boat.
In Matthew 17:20 Jesus was talking to His disciples when He said to them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Mustard seeds were the smallest garden seed in Jesus’ culture, so using this as an example was relevant at the time. Like every seed, mustard seeds need time to germinate, which happens underground.
And then it hit me. It’s our unseen work that eventually produces fruit.
It’s receiving the “no” and continuing to press on toward your calling.
It’s that pivotal moment after your alarm goes off that you choose to go to the gym instead of hitting snooze.
It's opening your Bible and spending time in prayer even when you may not feel like it at first.
And for me, it’s choosing to continue to rely on God to fill my heart and mind with encouraging words that will decorate pages and pages to come.
That’s the underground work for us, the “germinating” of our faith that matters! It isn’t always pretty, and we’re going to want to resist, but it’s what grows us closer to God and His calling on our lives.
All we need is a little faith, faith the size of a mustard seed.
Reflect:
Try to memorize this portion of Matthew 17:20 (NIV) this week, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Is there something you’ve wanted to give up on that you sense God still wants to grow? Keep leaning into His voice. Your "fruit" or answered prayer may be right around the corner!
